Grass Moss

While exploring the area around my parents house in rural Kansas, I found a large amount fossilized wooden branches.

I transported branches back to my studio because I knew I wanted to work with them. I was especially drawn to the pieces that were covered in lichen. I wanted to replicate these moss-like patterns.

I figured that grass could possibly be turned into a moss-like substance and experimented with different processes of making grass a more spongy material.

Once it had reached a consistency I liked, I applied it to one of the branches I had collected.

The results were good, but the color didn’t retain as vibrantly as I wanted when it dried. I decided to add green food coloring as I boiled the grass and then added more when I blended it. The results were much more vibrant. I applied around five layers of the grass-moss substance.

The green food coloring made the grass retain its vibrancy weeks after it had dried.

I plan to add more to this piece and experiment with how I can replicate the process into other art projects.
